Best AI model for coding (October 2026)
Updated Oct 29, 2026 · Based on public comments from Aug 29, 2026 to Oct 28, 2026
Which model do developers actually reach for when they write, debug and review code? We read what people said about each model in programming and AI communities, counting only comments that judged a model on coding work.
Best overall: Claude Opus 5.5. Nearly every coding opinion about it was positive, often from people who switched to it from other tools.
Best open model: Qwen3.8 (especially the 27B and Flash Next builds), with DeepSeek V4.1 and GLM 5.3 close behind.
Weakest reception: Grok 4.7 and Gemini 4 Argon, where most coding opinions were complaints.

- #1Claude Opus 5.5Anthropic92/100 · 96% positive · 47 opinions
Developers describe it as the most dependable model for real projects and agentic coding in Claude Code. The one recurring complaint is cost and usage limits, not quality.

- #2Qwen3.8Alibaba86/100 · 95% positive · 20 opinions
Local users praise it as the strongest coding model you can run yourself, good enough to replace paid models for everyday tasks. A few found DeepSeek better at catching edge cases.

- #3DeepSeek V4.1DeepSeek82/100 · 93% positive · 15 opinions
Liked for bug finding and code review at a very low price. One tester said the Flash build writes code that looks right but runs poorly.

- #4GLM 5.3Zhipu AI80/100 · 90% positive · 10 opinions (small sample)
Seen as a cheap, solid coder, especially the Flash variant for long agentic sessions such as game development.

- #5Claude Sonnet 5.5Anthropic77/100 · 80% positive · 25 opinions
A popular everyday workhorse that many pair with Opus for harder problems. Some users found the highest reasoning setting no better than lower ones.

- #6GPT-6 AstraOpenAI75/100 · 76% positive · 21 opinions
Respected for hard problems and high-level design decisions, and often used as a code reviewer. Critics say it over-engineers and its chat app struggles with long coding sessions.

- #7GPT-6.1 SolOpenAI74/100 · 81% positive · 16 opinions
Liked by heavy users for volume and value. Critics say the 6.x versions are lazier than 5.6 and search the codebase less carefully.

- #8Claude Haiku 5.5Anthropic50/100 · 33% positive · 6 opinions (small sample)
Fine for small, cheap tasks when you want to stretch a plan. Several people found it noticeably worse than Sonnet or a local Qwen.

How this ranking works
We read public comments about AI models posted between Aug 29, 2026 and Oct 28, 2026, kept the ones that judged a specific model version on this task, and labeled each as positive, mixed or negative. Each person counts at most a few times, and bots and off-topic mentions are left out. Rankings show what users report, not lab benchmarks, and a loud minority can sway small samples.
